Crime Branch probes Trombay police's role after a man they arrested a week ago died on Thursday.

The Crime Branch is probing the Trombay police's role in the alleged custodial death of a 26-year-old Chembur man arrested a week ago for bootlegging. The post-mortem, conducted at J J Hospital, revealed the tongue of the deceased, Sachin Dhage, 26, had been slashed and there were bruise marks on the body. The post-mortem said that Dhage also suffered lung hemorrhage (acute bleeding from the lung), even as the Crime Branch insisted "no external injuries" could be seen.

As per the Trombay police records, Dhage was arrested and booked under the Bombay Prohibition Act on February 14. The next day, he complained of unease and nausea, and was admitted to the Sion Hospital. On February 19, at the insistence of his family, Dhage was shifted to a private hospital in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, where he died on Thursday due to lung hemorrhage.

The Crime Branch said preliminary investigation has revealed that Dhage suffered epileptic seizures while he was admitted to the Sion Hospital, resulting in injuries to tongue. "It doesn't seem to be a case of torture in the lockup. However, investigations are on," a senior Crime Branch officer said.

Dhage's family, however, said that he was adriver and was framed at the behest of a man named Sachin Shirsat, who allegedly controls bootlegging in the eastern suburbs. The deceased's sister, Nanda, said: "My brother was a soft target. He was arrested from his home in Gautam Nagar and was thrashed so severely that he collapsed in the court the next day."

Nanda alleged that Gautam Nagar is the hub of illegal alcohol business and Shirsat had tried convincing her brother of confessing to bootlegging in return of money. "My brother was a freelance driver and the only earning member of our family consisting of our mother, his wife and a son. When we met him in the court, we saw injury marks all over his body. He wasn't able to speak because his tongue was slit. He was continuously vomiting blood and it was too late by the time he was shifted to aprivate hospital. He was beaten up by police and we have submitted a complaint to the Collectorate demanding investigation," Nanda said.

Senior Inspector (Crime Branch) Sripad Kale said the investigators were awaiting medical case papers from Sion Hospital and the Nirmaya Hospital, where Dhage died. "Prima facie, it appears he died because of lung hemorrhage. Once we speak to the doctors and go through the hospital documents, we will be able to ascertain the cause of death," Kale said.

While the Trombay police officers refused to comment, a senior doctor from J J Hospital's Forensic Department confirmed the injury marks to the body. "Multiple contusions (bruises) could be seen on the body and the deceased's tongue was badly injured. He suffered lung hemorrhage, and had developed fatty liver, generally found in alcoholics. However, we are unable to ascertain the cause of death. The viscera have been sent for histopathology to the Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory," the doctor said.
