AAP took permission for Shiv Jayanti, organised election rally instead

AAP took permission for Shiv Jayanti, organised election rally instead
The Aam Aadmi Party, which spares no time in flaying anyone with even a whiff of corruption or irregularity around them, itself broke a major BMC rule on Wednesday.

The party had taken permission from the civic body to hold a celebration of Shiv Jayanti at a playground in Andheri, but organised an election rally at the venue instead. For this, the BMC on Thursday issued them a notice and forfeited their Rs 2,200 deposit. According to the BMC rules, playgrounds cannot be use for political rallies.

The party had been given permission to celebrate Shiv Jayanti at Sant Ramdas Park in Andheri (West) by BMC's ward office.

However, on Wednesday, AAP's think tank Yogendra Yadav and candidates Medha Patkar (Mumbai north-east), Mayank Gandhi (Mumbai north-west), Anjali Damania (Nagpur) and Vijay Pandhare (Nashik) participated in rally to kick start their campaign for state Lok Sabha elections at the venue.

"The party had asked for permission for a religious function and not for a political rally. When we realised they were holding an election rally at the venue, we immediately send a show cause notice the party and forfeited their deposit," said Vishwas Shankarward, assistant municipal commissioner of K-East ward.

"We also informed the party office bearer that they will not be allowed to organise any rally at BMC playgrounds in the future," Shankarwar added. "It is a clear-cut violation of BMC's guidelines on the use of playgrounds and recreational grounds in the city." According to the police, close to 3,500 had gathered at the playground for the rally. Preeti Sharma, AAP secretary for Maharastra, said, "We accept our mistake. We deserve the action initiated by the BMC. Our party workers sought permission for Shiv Jayanti instead of a political rally. We are ready to pay any fine," she said.
