Two dairy owners from Palghar, Thane, were killed on Saturday night after their Tavera rammed into a stationary tractor trailer near Ahmedabad. The car's 6 remaining passengers sustained severe injuries and were admitted to Mehsana Civil Hospital.
Latesh Waman Patil, 42, and Devendra Narayan Patil, 58, had gone to Mehsana, 76 kms from Ahmedabad, with their colleagues to buy milch buffaloes, which are famous in the area. After clinching a Rs 15 lakh deal with a breeder for 15 buffaloes, the group was returning to Palghar in a Tavera SUV. "My uncle told me they coming back after loading the buffaloes and were going to stop at Palanpur, near Mehsana, for a meal," said Prakshep Raut, the nephew of one of the injured.
While they were driving through Deesa village at around 9 pm, the Tavera, which was being driven by Ajay Patil, rammed into a tractor trailer which was parked along the side of a narrow road which led to the highway. According to an eye witness, the parking lights of the trailer were off, due to which the driver did not notice the vehicle in the darkness, and rammed into it. One side of the Tavera was completely crushed in the accident.
Bharat Kumbar, Hitesh Raut, Umakant Gharat, Kalpesh Raut, Hareshwar Tare, and Ajay Kishore Patil have been hospitalised. Gharat, who sustained severe head injuries, and Tare are in serious condition. The bodies of the dead will arrive it Palghar today, after the post-mortem and police formalities are completed, said Raut.
A Mehsana police official he said an ADR (accidental death register) case has been registered, and the tractor driver is absconding. "The Mehsana RTO has been informed to trace the owner," he said.
