Cricketer-turned-politician Chandrika Jain-Kenia booked for assaulting a public servant; she had allegedly slapped another waiter a few years ago over a delayed dessert.

A former Rajya Sabha MP known for her firebrand ways slapped a waiter on a Mumbai-bound Rajdhani Express, after she found the apple served in breakfast a bit too small for her liking.

Former India under-25 cricketer-turned politician Chandrika Jain-Kenia had allegedly slapped another steward a couple of years ago on the Rajdhani Express over a delayed dessert, the waiter, Santosh Kumar, said in his complaint to the Mumbai Central Government Railway Police (GRP). She has been booked under sections 323 and 332 of the Indian Penal Code for assaulting a public servant and preventing him from carrying out his duty.

Kumar, 29, said in his complaint that he served Jain breakfast in the I-AC coach around 8.15 am Friday, and she threw a fit saying the size of the apple was too small for her liking. "She demanded to speak to the manager, and I rushed to the pantry to inform him. When we returned around 15 minutes later, she had finished eating and slapped me without any provocation," the complaint said.

Kumar, who joined the Railways around five years ago, said he didn't react despite being humiliated in front of other passengers. "The train was nearing Virar, and the manager suggested we file a police complaint. A few years ago, she had slapped my colleague, accusing him of not bringing her an ice-cream cone in time," Kumar said.

Senior Inspector Rajendra Trivedi from the Mumbai Central GRP said the complaint is being probe, while another railway cop said Jain too had approached the Mumbai Central GRP against the waiter.

"She approached us as soon as the train arrived, and complained about the delay in getting breakfast. We told her it was not our jurisdiction and that she should approach the Railway. She approached us even before the waiter filed a complaint," the officer said. Officials of the IRCTC, who handle catering on Rajdhani, refused to comment while Jain could not be contacted.

WHO IS CHANDRIKA JAIN-KENIA

Cricket records describe Chandrika Jain-Kenia as a right-hand batswoman and a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. Political analysts say that her transformation into a firebrand politician was a fry cry from the flighted deliveries she bowled on the cricket field.

She's been affiliated with several parties - the Shiv Sena, the Congress, the Samajwadi Party - and served as minister of state for education in the S B Chavan ministry from 1986 to 1988, and as a Shiv Sena MP in the Rajya Sabha. She was fielded by the Samajwadi Party from the Thane Lok Sabha constituency in 1998, and once, in the middle of an election campaign, rushed off for a boat ride. Her supporters had coined an interesting slogan: "Delhi mein Sonia aur Thane mein Kenia."
