Chembur docs charged with negligence over death of 20-year-old

Two doctors from a private hospital in Chembur hospital have been charged with negligence over the death of a 20-year-old man whom they had treated on Saturday.

A complaint was registered against Dr Naseem Khan, owner of Shifa Hospital & Daignostic Centre in Chembur, and Dr Sharma, who also works there, after the victim's relatives ransacked the hospital. Dr Sharma, a homoepathic doctor, was arrested by the Tilak Nagar police on Saurday evening, while Dr Khan, who has an MBBS degree, is absconding.

Avinash Parad, a resident of Mahatma Phule Nagar in Chembur, died of an infection on Saturday after he was allegedly administered the wrong injection. He has been admitted to Shifa Hospital on February 12 with a fever and underwent treatment there for three days.

However, as his condition continued to deteriorate, the doctors discontinued his treatment on Saturday and told his relatives to shift him to a better facility. Parad was taken to J J Hospital but died there soon after. His family claimed doctors' negligence caused his death.

Chhaya (35), Avinash's mother, claimed the doctors administered the wrong injections, which led to her son's death. "He was admitted for minor heath issues. Slowly, his body started swelling. We brought this to the notice of the doctors, who paid no heed to our concerns. Finally, on Saturday, they told us to taken him to another hospital as the case was out of their hands. J J Hospital doctors were not able to do much and my son died within few minutes of being admitted there," her complaint read.

However, it is yet to be ascertained if he died because of medical negligence. "A post mortem was conducted at JJ Hosptial, but opinion was been reserved pending a forensic test. We can't be certain about negligence until we know the exact cause of death," said an official at Tilak Nagar police station.

Around 6 pm on Saturday, enraged relatives and local residents arrived at Shifa Hospital with Avinash's body, demanding action against the accused doctors, who left the hospital from the rear after they saw the huge crowd outside. This mob later ransacked the hospital, destroying furniture, medical equipment and beds. A case of rioting has been registered against them at Tilak Nagar police station.
