Bus hits aged couple in Vashi, man dies on the spot
An aged couple from Tamil Nadu was hit by a BEST bus in Vashi late on Monday night. While the husband died on the spot, the wife was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Three other passersby escaped just in the nick of the time and the errant bus driver was later arrested. The couple, Nadesan Kaunder (55) and his wife Katayi Kaunder (50) were visiting their nephew, a Vashi resident.

They were walking towards the Vashi depot at 11 pm on Monday when a BEST bus hit them. Their nephew Rajendra (43) is a skilled construction worker at Juigaon in Vashi. The victims were residents of Villupuram in Tamil Nadu.

The accused, identified as Shambaji Shinde (39), has been booked for rash and negligent driving. SB Gaikwad of Vashi police station said, "Nadesan died instantly of his injuries, while Katayi was rushed to MGM hospital in a critical condition. She is reported to be out of danger. Three others who were crossing the road at the same time managed to escape at the last moment."

Rajendra said, "We had just finished dinner and were heading home. Everyone was in a joyous mood and enjoying the weather. Suddenly, a bus came speeding and was gone in a moment."

He added that several others were fortunate to have survived as the driver had no control over the vehicle. Meanwhile, BEST officials informed that the bus was operating on route number 521 from Tardeo to Ghansoli, via Vashi depot. "The driver claims that the couple suddenly appeared on the road and since it was dark it was difficult to spot them," police said.

In 2013, BEST reported 29 accidents in the city, in which 32 people lost their lives. August reported five deaths, while October had a clean record with not a single fatal mishap. In 2012, BEST had recorded 30 fatal accidents, while the figures were 26 and 49 in 2011 and 2010 respectively.
