Over 1 lakh students to take first HSC exam todayToday

Today, 1,22,945 HSC students in Mumbai will appear for the first paper, on languages. Over 13 lakh HSC students will be appearing for the exams statewide. Of these, 3,28,698 are from the city's junior colleges.

There are 587 centres and subcentres to host the examinations, where over 13,000 invigilators will be supervise students. In addition, 34 flying squads will monitor various centres to clamp down on plagiarism.

Junior colleges have been busy organising facilities to ensure that the exams pass off smoothly. Nodal centres have the responsibility of collecting and distributing the question papers. The exams will be held in two shifts - 11 am to 2 pm and 3pm to 6pm.

Principals feel that the online delivery of papers adopted by the university for degree courst exams may be helpful if implemented for the board exams as well. "We are well-equipped to handle the examinations, as are most other junior colleges. The university's system is quite efficient and it would help if the same system was used for the board exams as well," said Dr V Katchi, principal of Bhavans college, Andheri.

Meanwhile, the board will now allow students to carry their own logbooks to the exams. The board had previously announced that it was mandatory for students to use logbooks provided at the centre only. However, students had pointed out several errors in them. MNVS had escalated the issue to the board, which eventually relented. "There were two to three errors on almost every page. The board had promised to fix them, but it was not a feasible to do so as they can't print so many copies in a couple of days," said Sudhakar Tamboli from MNVS.

Mumbai divisional board chairman, Laxmikant Pande said, "The students are free to bring their own logbooks. But they must come early and get them approved by the supervisors. Only then will they be allowed to use them." He added that corrected logbooks will also be available at the centres.
