Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department on Saturday arrested two women passengers for allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth Rs 20 lakh into the country at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
Sources in AIU said Rekha Tarunahasanee and Kanaka Pandyan were carrying 762 grams of gold each. They had arrived from Bangkok.
"We have recovered gold chains, wrist watches and other ornaments," said an officer.
Both were later released on bail. In another case, customs officials seized 22 gold bars altogether weighing 2,552 grams from Musthafa Mannath, a passenger who arrived from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
"He had concealed the gold, valued around Rs 67 lakh, in two car horns and a grinder," said an airport official. PTI
