Two sex workers from Kamathipura helped police rescue a 19-year-old woman whose husband tried to sell her to them for Rs 40,000 on Wednesday.
The husband, Salauddin Khan, 38, and his first wife Asma, 35, were arrested the same day for attempting to sell the young woman who was Khan's second wife and had a two-monthold daughter by him.
Khan, a resident of Ajmer and a cook by profession, had arrived in Mumbai two days ago. He had brought along both his wives and his infant daughter. He had insisted that the second wife come along with him, telling her they were going to visit the Haji Ali dargah, a place of spiritual importance. After spending two days in the city, Khan brought his entire family to Kamathipura, with the intention of selling off his second wife and daughter. Police said Asma was also privy to Khan's plot.
At Kamathipura, Khan and Asma approached two women at a tea stall, and straightaway asked them if they were in the flesh trade. When the women admitted they were, Khan offered to sell them his second wife for Rs. 40,000. The women, sensing that something was wrong, immediately alerted a passing police patrol van. The cops brought Khan to the police station where he confessed he was in need of money and wanted to get rid of his second wife and his baby daughter.
"The victim was not aware about Khan's intentions till she was brought to the police station," said a senior inspector with Nagpada police station. "The women who were approached realised that she was being sold without her consent, and alerted us." The young woman will be sent to a rescue home where she will stay till her parents are traced, said the police.
