Cops suspect Udupi hotel manager smothered children before hanging himself; wife, paramour untraceable.
Unable to come to terms with his wife deserting him and allegedly eloping with a neighbour on Monday morning, a Nalla Sopara man murdered his two minor daughters and then committed suicide at his residence in Achole on Tuesday.
According to the police, the woman and her paramour are untraceable and their mobile phones have been switched off. The husband, police said, scribbled a suicide note on awall of the flat, blaming his wife for running away with another man.
Shridhar Shetty, 40, the manager of an Udupi hotel in Vasai (W) married Sonali, 28, a few years ago and had two daughters, aged nine and five. The couple had shifted last year from Andheri to a rented flat in Jay Ganesh Shopping Centre, Achole Road, Nalla Sopara (E) to be close to Shetty's work place.
At their rented flat in Nalla Sopara, they came in contact with Tejas Doshi, 34, a neighbour who lived with his parents and brother. The Shettys and the Doshis were on friendly terms, and would even have meals together, police said.
On Monday, Shetty did not go to work and Sonali was not seen by neighbours at the common water tap during the day. The two children too did not come out to play in the compound, according to PSI Sunil Lokhande of the Nalla Sopara police. On Tuesday, with newspapers and milk pouches lying unclaimed on the Shettys' doorstep the whole day, the neighbours grew suspicious, he said.
"On Tuesday night, the neighbours finally approached the flat but found it locked from inside. They then managed to slide open a window and were shocked to see Shetty hanging from the ceiling fan in the bedroom," said PSI Lokhande.
"After the neighbours called us, we forced open the door, and found the two daughters lying dead on the floor. It appears that Shridhar had smothered his daughters with a pillow while they were asleep on Tuesday, and then committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan," PSI Lokhande said.
"Shetty had scribbled a suicide note on a wall, blaming his wife for eloping with the neighbour," the officer said. "We have sent the bodies for post-mortem and are awaiting the reports."
The police have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) against Shetty, as well as a case of accidental death. "As Sonali and the neighbour Tejas are untraceable, we presume that they may have eloped as claimed by Shetty in the note," PSI Lokhande said. "However, we need strong evidence, and if proved correct we will register a case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) against Sonali and Tejas. Until then, we are investigating all possible angles," he added.
