A25-tonne steel coil rolled off a trailer and crushed two people on a motorcycle near Boisar, about 112 km from Mumbai, early on Tuesday. A third biker was also injured in the freak accident, which took place around 1 am after the trailer got detached from the truck.
The trucker didn't realise that the trailer had got disengaged and drove on. When he realised what had happened, he abandoned the vehicle and fled.
The Boisar MIDC police have booked the unidentified driver for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and have also contacted his employer to know his whereabouts.
The stainless steel coil was loaded onto the truck-trailer, owned by Kalamboli-based Jyoti Transport, at the Boisar railway truck terminal and was bound for Taloja. In Chilhar village, the trailer got detached from the truck and hit a kerb, dislodging the coil from its hold and causing it to roll down.
Boisar residents Gynaeshwar Kolgaonkar (26) and Ravi Jadhav (22), who were on a bike behind, were crushed under the 25-tonne cargo. Another biker, Santosh Jadhav (23), who was following the victims, was also injured in the incident, said Sub-Inspector Vishwas Patil.
"The truck driver didn't realise what had happened and continue to drive. Later, he stopped on the side of the road and fled," Patil said.
