In yet another case of a parent killing his/her children and committing suicide, a 28-year-old woman from Nalla Sopara jumped off the Bhayandar creek bridge clasping her five-year-old son on Monday afternoon.
The victims have been identified as Yashoda Rana and Vikas. Yashoda's husband, Hoshiyar Singh Rana, is a teacher at a school in Thane.
This comes just a week after a 48-year-old restaurant manager, Sreedhar Shetty, smothered his daughters, aged five and nine, and hanged himself at his Nalla Sopara residence last Tuesday after his wife allegedly eloped with her neighbour.
The Bhayandar police said a suicide note, with the phone number of Yashoda's husband scribbled, was recovered along with the bodies.
"Yashoda had used her dupatta to tie her son to her body. It seems she wanted to ensure that he didn't survive. The suicide note said that no-one should be blamed for Yashoda's actions," an officer from Bhayandar Police Station said.
The woman's father, however, has said in his statement that a few hours before the incident, his son-in-law called him up and requested his intervention in a dispute between the couple.
"There were problems between the couple but there will not be any arrests till the probe is completed. A case of accidental death has been registered," an officer from Bhayandar Police Station said.
In October last year, a 36-year-old Navi Mumbai woman, Mita Dhigare, strangulated her two-year-old son and committed suicide at her residence in Airoli. She had also left behind a note saying no-one should be held responsible for her actions. In 2012, as many as four cases of parents killing their children and committing suicide were reported in the city, shocking psychologists.
