Don Bosco's Prafulta Psychological Services, Andheri, has launched a first-of-its-kind free mental health outreach programme for school children and parents across some of the western suburbs.
Over 2,000 school children and parents will be covered by this outreach, which ends in the last week of February. Close to 20 workshops will be held, both in Hindi and English, by Prafulta's trained counsellors. The workshops will be conducted at no cost to schools.
For students, primarily of Stds 8 and 9, the topics of peer pressure, handling difficult emotions (like anger among adolescents) and handling social networking will be dealt with, whereas parents will be given guidance on raising emotionally healthy children.
"If these life skills or coping skills are given at the appropriate time to teenagers, many problems they would otherwise face later can be averted," a counsellor with the programme said.
"Also, with such workshops, they become aware that they may need help and realise that help is available," he added.
