BMC chief Sitaram Kunte assured the civic body's group leaders that the BMC would not allow any new towers in the city until the final policy for mobile towers was finalised
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has rejected a proposal to erect towers for 4G technology in Mumbai, saying there is no policy that allows it to do so.
Reliance Jio Infocomm had earlier asked for permission to install about 3,000 4G towers in Mumbai. The BMC rejected the proposal and also decided not to allow the installation of any mobile towers - 4G or other - until the policy is finalised.
According to BMC officials, Reliance had asked for permission to dig up roads and footpaths to lay optic fibre cables and erect 25-metre 4G towers every 200 metres.
On, Thursday BMC chief Sitaram Kunte informed the civic body's group leaders that the BMC had already issued a notice over a Reliance tower at Chembur that was erected on private land. He also assured the leaders that the civic administration would not allow any new towers in the city until the final policy for mobile towers was finalised.
Rais Sheikh, Samajwadi Party leader in the BMC, raised the issue at the meeting, saying that the company had permission from the state government but also needed the permission of the BMC.
"Development control regulations (DCR) don't allow any tower or utility service infrastructure to be set up without the permission of the BMC," Sheikh said. Mayor Sunil Prabhu added that the BMC had rejected Reliance's pro posal to erect 4G towers.
Standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale then brought to the group's notice that Relaince had already erected a mobile tower in Chembur.
"The BMC has already issued notice over the tower. We will finalise the policy for mobile towers very soon and then take a decision on 4G towers," Shewale said.
Meanwhile, the Thane Municipal Corporation also directed its officers to take action against five towers erected at Kharigaon, Parsik Retibunder and Mumbra.
According to the TMC, these five towers were erected by Reliance Jio Infocomm with help of Chintamani Tele Infra and DS Consultancy.
The executive engineer of the TMC's city development department directed the concerned assistant commissioners to take action.
According to a Reliance spokesperson, however, the firm has already taken down the Chembur tower and the ones in Thane. "The Chembur tower was on our own land and was removed due to an electronic problem," he said.
