‘People will think 2G involves urea’

‘People will think 2G involves urea’

Two out of four tapes released by AAP have conversations between Kanimozhi and former Tamil Nadu chief of intelligence Jaffer Sait allegedly covering up the scandal; CBI to investigate after AAP hands over tapes to SC.

The CBI will once again look into the 2G spectrum allocation scam after AAP revealed four new tapes on Tuesday, claiming the DMK leadership covered up the multi-crore scandal.

One of the four tapes, dated December 31, 2010, contain conversations between the then Tamil Nadu chief of intelligence Jaffer Sait and M Shanmuganathan, secretary of then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

Another tape, dated February 13, 2011, contains conversations between Sait and Sharad Kumar Reddy, MD, Kalaignar TV, owned by Karunanidhi family.

The other two tapes - dated November 23, 2010 and February 16, 2011 - have conversations between Sait and Rajya Sabha MP M Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi's daughter. In one of the conversations, Sait allegedly tells Kanimozhi that the slum-dwellers of Chennai would think that 2G was some sort of fertiliser (see below).

AAP claimed that the tapes appeared to be genuine and were recorded by somebody using a mobile phone. Bhushan said that he would submit the tapes to the Supreme Court on Monday.

Meanwhile, sources said that the CBI would take the case up after the tapes were submitted in court.

Bhushan also alleged the involvement of the Tata group. "Former Tata chief Ratan Tata wrote a personal handwritten letter to Karunanidhi on November 13, 2007, which was given to the DMK leader by corporate lobbyist Nira Radia," said Bhushan, also claiming that Tata had donated Rs 25 lakh to an NGO called Tamil Maiyam where Kanimozhi was a director. "The donation was given five days before the 2G licences were granted."

AAP also said that they would field a candidate to fight Kanimozhi if she contests the Lok Sabha polls.

EXCERPT FROM ALLEGED CONVERSATION BETWEEN KANIMOZHI AND SAIT

Kanimozhi: I would love to go to Chennai slums and ask them what it means.

Jaffar Sait: Which one, ma'am?

Kanimozhi: No, no... I love to go to one of the Chennai slums... not even in village... in one of the slums in Chennai and ask them have they heard of this... (referring to 2G scam)

Jaffar Sait: Everyone will think it is some circulated urea... or fertiliser.
